The Central Wyoming College theatre department has announced that the spring musical “Carousel” has been canceled due to the continuation of COVID-19 outbreaks and health concerns from the pandemic.

I’ve been working on trying to move forward with putting on live theatre, but the more I thought about “Carousel” the more the realization hit me, maybe it would be better if we pushed the performances of this show one calendar year. “Carousel” is a show that has the power to change lives, but it’s a show that needs an audience to have that communal experience that we share when performing live. ”

Joey West, theatre director

"Carousel" was set to hit the stage March 19. West, although disheartened about canceling the show, still wanted to give his students the experience to perform. In place of the spring production, he decided to do weekly podcasts and Zoom listening rooms with readings from shows and discussions about them. Every Monday and Tuesday night from 6–7:30 pm the community is welcome to attend the Zoom listening session.

“We will be reading a play or a musical live. We will not be broadcasting the reading due to copyright laws, but if you would like to attend the zoom meeting let me know,” West said. “We will read the script and if we are reading a musical when we get to a song we will listen to the original Broadway cast recording.”

Every Wednesday night from 6-7:30 pm West will lead a discussion on the show the students have read which will be aired on CWC’s podcast on Monday mornings.

Zoom listening sessions and podcasts will start within the next few weeks. To listen to the class readings go to www.cwc.edu/artscenter/. Or if you have any questions contact Joey West at jwest@cwc.edu.
