Burnett remains top competitor at Casper Rodeo

Central Wyoming College’s junior, Kaylee Burnett has maintained her second place title for the Central Rocky Mountain Region in the women’s all-around, just behind Gillette College’s Taylor Engesser. Burnett placed fourth in the barrels at last weekend’s rodeo, hosted by Casper College, with 15.83 seconds in the long-go round and 15.85 in the short-go round. Burnett is currently in fifth place standings for the region in barrel racing. “Kaylee has put herself in a real good position to take over one of the number three spots in barrel racing,” rodeo coach Drew Schrock said. The women’s team has moved up to fifth place in the region with 975 points. Two CWC saddle bronc riders placed at the event; sophomore, Garrett Buckley placed second and freshman, Seth Cumpton followed in third place. Both making a score in the long-go round with Buckley scoring a 64 and Cumpton scoring a 52, unfortunately both ended with a no score in the short go-round. In the breakaway event, freshman Brooke Hursh placed tenth with 2.9 seconds in the long-go round and a no time in the short-go round. Freshman, Daniel Huxtable placed eighth in steer wrestling with a time of 4.7 seconds in the long-go round but received a no time in the short-go round. Currently, CWC men’s team is ninth in the region with 1,040 points. “The team is doing a lot of good things and I’m expecting any weekend to have a break out weekend. We’ll just keep doing what we are doing,” Schrock said. The top two men’s and women’s teams will go to the College National Finals Rodeo and the top three individuals in each event including the top two in the all-around. Currently, none of the rodeo team members are in the top three spots except for Burnett who is second in all-around but that can change at the end of the next rodeo. “I don’t like to get caught up in points,” Schrock said, “A lot can change at the next rodeo and you can have one outstanding performance that bumps you up in standings.” “Burnett has the best shot and I think some of my saddle bronc riders have a good shot too.” The team will wrap up their spring season at the University of Wyoming May 1-3.
